Wellness Services

We can do so much more now for our cherished pets to cure or slow down diseases and ultimately enhance their quality of life.

With our pets, who are great at hiding their illnesses, an annual health evaluation is recommended. In older age this increases to a routine six monthly check over. This can be combined with a vaccination due or as a separate visit.

The Wellness Exam

expand_more

The basis of preventative care in pets should be the routine physical examination and owner history. This is key to identifying problems early

We examine the eyes - Corneal disease, dry eye and glaucoma must be identified early if medical therapies are going to work best.

We examine the mouth - Gum disease is a very common and underrated cause of reduced health and pain with irreversible periodontal disease occurring if left untreated. Oral cancers are often malignant and require early detection

We examine the ear canals - Ear infections are very common in dogs and often presented at an advanced stage where medical management is challenging.

We listen to the heart and lungs - Heart disease can be treated better than ever extending quality of life

We examine the skin - Almost all the common skin tumours’ can be cured if surgery is early enough.

We palpate the abdomen - In many pets we can feel the organs and have often detected abnormalities requiring urgent treatment

We examine the joints - Arthritis in pets is very common and often overlooked as normal ageing. Many options are now available to dramatically improve quality of life

Health screening testing - In combination with a physical examination of your pet, blood and urine tests can reveal early changes in your pets health before they become obvious.

A trend in these tests over time can be very helpful to address disease while it is most responsive to therapy.

When you schedule your pets annual visit you can request a blood and urine test to be run at the same time. Like ourselves the risk of disease increases as we age. For this reason, we suggest active testing to start at seven years of age.

We have a value “ preventative healthcare “ package which provides a comprehensive evaluation and blood testing which can be added to a Vaccination visit. If you would like to add a urine screen also then a fresh sample can be brought to the visit. Please contact us for details before your visit.

Hospital care

For pets that require more intensive care they can be admitted to our hospital. This may include such care as intravenous fluid therapy, intravenous antibiotics, pain management, intensive feeding, blood transfusions, serial blood testing etc.

A very important part of this process is a high standard of nursing care. We are fortunate to have great nurses and a big enough team to ensure your pet is constantly monitored and cared for. For those pets with cardiac and respiratory emergencies we have a dedicated intensive care enclosure that can immediately deliver oxygen and warmth as needed.

Pets are kept in a hygienic and comfortable environment at “Best Practice” standards with cats separate from dogs in their own ward. Infectious cases will be managed in an isolation ward to protect other pets.
Our team are focused on your pets’ emotional welfare while with us and we use a number of stress reducing techniques based on our commitment to the “Fear Free” approach we have adopted.

Nurse clinics

Our wonderful nursing staff are crucial for the high level of care we can provide for you and your pets. Being a busy practice offering many services means our trained nurses have developed a wide range of skills. You can make the most of our nurses’ collective experience with our reduced fee or free nurse clinic services.

For minor medical procedures where your pet is well and you don’t require the input of a Vet you can request a nurse consult at a lower cost.

Such procedures include nail clipping, anal sac emptying, minor knot removal, cartrophen and cytopoint injections, subcutaneous fluid administration, blood pressure checks and follow up urine tests.

Some of the free nurse services include giving medication, suture removal, drain removal, wound checks and weight loss advice. Training on various pet procedures is also available such as insulin injections, at home subcutaneous fluid administration, syringe feeding or using feeding tubes at home, techniques to give medication, new born feeding etc.
