Diagnostic Services

When your beloved pet is unwell and a physical examination does not provide the answers needed, other diagnostics tests will be recommended.

Diagnostic services are a core requirement in small animal practice and East Coast Bays Vet is always updating and investing in the latest and greatest options. Providing these services promptly within our own clinic can make all the difference in outcomes for your pet.

East Coast Bays FAQs FAQ

What does our on-site laboratory offer?

expand_more

Our pets can’t talk of course so blood and urine tests can provide crucial insights into your pets’ health. These tests can be taken and processed in 10-20 minutes even while you wait or before a procedure so informed decisions can be made.

Our comprehensive IDEXX blood testing laboratory provides accurate and detailed information about a wide range of body processes. Our urine testing device uses artificial intelligence data sets to give rapid results for presence of bacteria, cell and crystal types. We can also evaluate the blood’s ability to clot, thyroid hormone levels and electrolytes.

What do digital X-rays offer?

expand_more

Another requirement for every vet practice is being able to provide high quality digital X-rays. These days X-rays don’t just provide information about bones but also the soft tissues in the body.

Unlike many clinics we also have a specific digital dental X-ray system which, as with human dentistry, is so essential for assessing dental health.

Do we provide ultrasound examinations?

expand_more

Yes, we are one of a few general practices that have high quality equipment with a Veterinarian in Dr Peta with the experience to use it well.

This is an invaluable tool to examine the organs of the abdomen in greater detail than is available with xray.

Do we provide endoscopic examinations?

expand_more

We have been providing this minimally invasive option for many years and it has become an essential part of how we can help pets.
Few practices outside of specialty centers offer these options.

What is 24 hour ECG holter monitoring?

expand_more

If your veterinarian thinks your pet has an abnormal heart beat rhythm an ECG to assess this will be recommended. It may also be recommended if your dog has unexplained weakness or collapse episodes.

Often a brief ECG is insufficient to identify the issue and an ECG attached to the dog over a 24 hour period is needed.
Some breeds like Boxers and Doberman’s are at high risk for arrhythmia. Your dog will wear the small monitor attached to a comfortable neoprene vest for 24 hours while going about a normal day. The digital results are then sent to a specialist in America to evaluate and provide a report.

What are PennHIP X-rays about?

expand_more

East Coast Bays Vet Clinic is certified to provide PennHIP X-rays which is the best standard for evaluating dogs for hip dysplasia.

Hip dysplasia is one of the most common causes of painful joint disease in our dog friends and more commonly an issue in the larger breeds around Labrador size and up. Hip dysplasia effectively just means how loose and sloppy the hip joint is, with the degree of looseness relating to the severity of arthritis as dogs age with this condition.

A standard xray of the hips does not measure this looseness but is useful for looking for secondary arthritis. The PennHIP system gives a measurement of the looseness, called a distraction index. This number can be used to rule out the condition or determine if your dog is mildly, moderately or severely affected. This is great for younger dogs so we can plan for their future care and management.

What other diagnostic services are available?

We have a tonometer which can check the pressure in a red eye to rule out the emergency that is glaucoma.

Our digital microscope is great for checking the type of organisms on the skin and in ears, checking lumps and more. A screen allows owners to see findings if they wish.
